How many of you make at least one New Years resolution each year? I’m assuming you’re nodding your head right now.
How many of you keep them? That’s what I thought.
This is why they’re bullshit.
The Statistic Brain Research Institute found that only 9.2% of humans ever keep our resolutions and break free of bad habits. Sure we have great ideas like a new app to help with weight loss, or automatic bank transfers to help save money, but most of us fail.
So if they fail, why do we keep making them?
Remember Einstein’s definition of insanity? Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
The reasons why most New Year’s resolutions fail
- We make too long of a list. Here are some examples:
- Double business revenues.
- Get more online reviews.
- Quit smoking.
- Quit drinking.
- Lose weight.
- Spend more time with friends and family.
- Read more books.
- Eat more healthy food or stop eating junk food.
- Learn to play an instrument.
- Learn a new skill, like social media marketing.
- Meet new people.
- Travel more.
Now our goals are unrealistic and we try to do everything at once.
What to do differently this year?
Here’s an idea, change just one of your habits.
According to research from University College London, it takes about 66 days to completely break an old habit, and it can take much longer to master something new. So give yourself little rewards along the way to victory.
Which one habit should you change?
What do highly successful entrepreneurs have in common? Ultra-successful people like Bill Gates, Oprah, Richard Branson, and Deepak Chopra all share everyday habits that are proven to produce success:
Here’s a list of the 21 habits of successful entrepreneurs. As you read through this list, take out a pen & paper and note down 1 thing you plan to change, because I’m going to ask you to share it with your best friend or life partner. That’s another trick to making a change – commit to it publicly:
- They keep a journal.
- They talk to themselves in a mirror.
- They meditate.
- They read (or listen to Audible, or Podcasts).
- They embrace their fears.
- They know that failure is part of success.
- They associate with only positive people. No Debbie Downers.
- They set intentions.
- They talk to the universe, to God or whichever higher power they believe in.
- They are thankful.
- They prioritize their time (big one!!!).
- They don’t sweat the small stuff.
- They focus on what they can control.
- They actively listen.
- They enjoy money as a byproduct of their dream but not as the dream itself.
- They don’t count on luck – success takes sweat.
- They love having fun and celebrating.
- They forgive themselves and others.
- They never give up but will change when needed.
- They don’t make rash or emotional decisions.
- They listen to their intuition.
Hopefully, you noticed that most of these new habits are not activities, like going to the gym. Instead, they relate to creating new patterns for your thoughts. Once you change your thoughts, your habits and actions will automatically change, too.
Don’t worry if you fail for a day, just keep going to the next day and the next day after that. Remember to celebrate your small victories, so you train your subconscious brain to program you for continued success.
The reason you are an entrepreneur is that you are far from average and taking educated risks gives you an edge. If anyone can do this, you can!
Happy New Year!!!
