Have You Switched To ChatGPT As Your Search Engine?

In my opinion, 2024 is the year when generative AI will become embedded into most of our systems and tools.  While last year, we may have all played around with ChatGPT, it was working off of old data and could not search online.  With the integration of ChatGPT and Bing, that all changed. Now, as someone who has spent over three decades navigating marketing and leadership, I find this partnership to be both intriguing and promising. I speak with more and more people who have started using ChatGPT, and not Google, as their primary search engine.  Have you?

ChatGPT As Search Engine

Now, I’m sure some of you might be scratching your heads and wondering why OpenAI didn’t team up with Google, the undisputed search engine giant. Trust me, I had the same thought. However, even though the dream partnership with Google didn’t materialize, the collaboration with Bing is nothing short of impressive. This integration was officially announced at a Microsoft ChatGPT event in February 2023. Executives from both companies confirmed that OpenAI’s cutting-edge chatbot technology would be seamlessly integrated into Bing and Microsoft’s web browser.

The partnership now gives ChatGPT the ability to not only provide answers but to furnish the source of those answers as well. Picture this: you ask ChatGPT a question, and not only does it generate a comprehensive response, but it also hands you the keys to the knowledge vault by offering citations. As someone deeply entrenched in the world of consultancy, I can attest to the game-changing nature of this feature. This collaborative venture empowers users to delve deeper into the authenticity and reliability of the information they receive. It transforms ChatGPT from a mere answer provider into a robust research companion. In a world inundated with information, having a tool that answers your queries and backs those answers with credible sources is a giant leap forward.

Now, let’s address any skepticism about ChatGPT partnering with Bing instead of Google. While Google may have been the obvious choice for many, Bing should not be underestimated. Bing has carved out its niche, offering a unique set of features and a distinct user experience. The ChatGPT-Bing synergy opens up a world of possibilities, enabling users to benefit from the strengths of both platforms. As someone who has witnessed the ebb and flow of technology partnerships over the years, I can appreciate the dynamics at play here. It’s not always about aligning with the biggest player; it’s about finding a partner whose strengths complement your own. In this case, the union of ChatGPT’s generative prowess with Bing’s search capabilities might just be a match made in digital heaven.  Or perhaps Microsoft was simply better at negotiating!

In my 35 years of global business experience, I’ve learned that progress often stems from unexpected collaborations. The ChatGPT-Bing alliance is a testament to this philosophy – a blend of leading-edge AI and solid search engine capabilities. The switch to ChatGPT might be the paradigm shift your online searches have been waiting for.

Of course, every tool has its limitations, and ChatGPT is no exception. There will be instances where a traditional search engine might still hold the upper hand. However, the constant advancements in AI technology will likely bridge these gaps sooner rather than later. And for marketers, our challenge is to reflect on how a potential shift in search strategy could impact the world of online advertising.  This is definitely a trend to watch!
